The Bavarian Lodge is my favorite German restaurant in the Chicagoland area to date. My friends and I frequent the Lodge at least monthly. The reason we keep coming back is no doubt the extensive beer list and the amazing food. The Bavarian Lodge looks the part from the outside and continues inside. Upon walking in you will be greeted with hand panted murals which will lead way to their vast collection of beer steins, some of which are for sale. The Bavarian Lodge is separated into two sections, the bar room and the dining room. The bar is a little noisier than the dining room but it is still easy to hold a conversation.

The first thing you should notice on your table is the tap list. The Bavarian Lodge offers 36 beers on tap from around the world in a number of different styles. If you can't find what you would like on tap there are roughly 150 bottles that should be able to satisfy anyone's taste. While the Bavarian Lodge is known for having craft beer, there is always a Munich brew on the list. After ordering your beer you will have a chance to look over the menu. The Lodge has a fairly large selection of food but if you are going for the authentic stuff I would suggest the Make Your Own Combo. With this you have a choice of up to three entries, choice of potato and vegetable side dish along with soup or salad. The entries are bratwurst, knackwurst, smoked thuringer, roast pork loin, homemade meatloaf, wiener schnitzel, chicken schnitzel, tiroler schnitzel, kassler rippchen, or veggie schnitzel. My personal favorite is bratwurst, smoked thuringer and wiener schnitzel. All of the authentic German cuisine, soups and sauces are made from scratch in their kitchen. The only downside to that is there are times during the dinner rush where food might come out a little slowly but it is well worth the wait.

While the Bavarian Lodge has a wonderful beer selection as well as food, it is lacking one essential element to any Oktoberfest and that is entertainment. Unfortunately, due to the size of the restaurant it is not possible to have a section to have a band and the Bavarian Lodge is not the type of place to have the very festive Oktoberfest atmosphere. The Lodge is a causal, warm, cozy and comfortable atmosphere. Also, beer is not available in one liter steins so as not to over-serve patrons who may then cause a ruckus.

But even with the above downfalls, the Bavarian Lodge is one of my favorite German restaurants in the Chicagoland area. Their food, beer, and dining room provide a lovely place to have a wonderful meal. This is why I love it and will keep coming back time after time.
